Days 4 & 5: Dewey, Dewey, Ooh Baby. . .

powered by Fotopedia

Talking about meta-data and the Dewey Decimal System for the past two days feels a bit like an out of body experience.   Because I don't have a library, and the notion of me as a teacher librarian is not an immediate reality, this has felt like a somewhat academic exercise. However, watching the teachers who already work in libraries has been the most edifying part of the lesson.  Tracy and Lori from Collingwood and Jen from Coquitlam seem to have a handle on cataloging.  Hearing them talk about how they manage their different library set-ups has added a much needed human side to the robotics of call numbers and MARC records.  I must add that I am using the term robotics in a pretty loose fashion, because the more the class has talked about the catalog, the more I am once again reflecting on the fact that the system is personality driven.

The standout moment for me today was when Tracy and Lori talked about what to do with their "Hot and New" books when they became "Lukewarm and not so New".
