Library 465 - Day 1

I didn't really think about what I was signing up for when I picked LIBE 465.  It was on the list of required courses for the diploma and it fit my summer schedule.  I guess I leaped before I looked.

Right now, the idea of being a Teacher Librarian is somewhat theoretical.  For the past five or six years, I have been trying to choose a subject of study for my PB+30.  After reviewing all of my teaching areas (English, ESL, Special Ed., Art, Theatre, and Foods) I couldn't find one area that I wanted to focus all my energy on for a further year of study.  Library came to me after spending two years at Eric Hamber School.  I spent all of my lunch hours, breaks, and prep periods, in the Library with Joan Muir the TL.  Seeing Joan collaborate with many teachers across the curriculum, convinced me to pursue my Teacher Librarianship.  I have always loved the library: I was a monitor throughout elementary school, and it was a place of solace and quiet study throughout my high school years.  Once I chose library for my sixth year of study, I knew I was on the right path.

So lately, I've been learning a lot about what I do not know.  Hence the avatar I chose today: the chinese apothecary chest.  I know that the library is full of great ideas and possibilities.  On the surface I think I know what a Teacher Librarian does and what an LRC is, but I am finding out every day that there is a lot more depth hidden in the job (there are secrets in all of those little drawers).   Cataloging has to be the one area of the library that I think/worry about the most.  I'm looking forward to this course, because I think it will give me some concrete ideas to allay my fears about the administrative business of the LRC.
